Psychosynthesis

Psychosynthesis provides a set of techniques and methods for harmonious developing the personality. It has been described as soul psychology and a psychology of the Spirit due to the acceptance of a dimension beyond day-to-day life; this dimension is often termed transpersonal and for this reason Psychosynthesis is often described as a form of Transpersonal Psychology. Psychosynthesis recognises the need to integrate the body, mind, emotions and spirit to make an individual into a balanced whole.

Roberto Assagioli, the founder of Psychosynthesis, stated that the main aims of Psychosynthesis are:

  1. The elimination of the conflicts and obstacles, conscious and unconscious, that block harmonious and complete development of the human personality.
  2. The use of active techniques to stimulate the psychological functions that are still weak and immature.

Psychosynthesis offers a way to experience life in a fuller, richer, way by assisting us in overcoming problems and limitations, removing blockages, integrating experiences, and increasing awareness and appreciation of feelings and emotions. The techniques and methods of Psychosynthesis explore the personality and offer a way to recognise and understand behaviour patterns. We can learn to control and integrate the various aspects of ourselves, such as our body, mind, and emotions. This leads to Self-realisation; the discovery and nurturing of a unified centre within us (the self or 'I'). Psychosynthesis can then occur, as a new, balanced and harmonious personality can be built up around this core.

Many of the techniques and methods used in a session with a Psychosynthesis guide can be adapted for an individual to use by themselves. Additionally, a number of useful techniques and exercises can be performed to practice Psychosynthesis and be empowered through this process. There are a number of books suitable for individuals to gain an understanding of Psychosynthesis, whether they are working with a guide or choosing to self-training. For more information please see my pages on Psychosynthesis Books and Psychosynthesis Exercises.

The Egg Diagram, provides a quick overview of the Psychosynthesis model of the psyche. It is a map of consciousness depicting the various areas, with the self ('I') being a central point within the larger picture. For more information see my article on the Psychosynthesis Egg Diagram.
